OPINION: Globalizing compassion amidst COVID-19
Compassion goes beyond just sympathy or empathy, it is a strong feeling for the suffering of others as your own and a deep desire to end it
By Kailash Satyarthi, Nobel Peace Prize recipient and the founder of Bachpan Bachao Andolan
Coronavirus has forced us to live a life that most of us have never experienced before with almost one fourth of the world’s population on lockdown.
A cloud of uncertainty has descended upon us all, leading to fear. The global economy has gone into a tailspin. No matter what part of the world we live in, no matter what our nationalities, color, religion, culture, socio-economic status, we are all facing the same crisis to varying degrees all at the same time. Our common fear can also become a source of courage, resilience and hope.
The current epidemic is forcing us to acknowledge that we are a world of common problems and solutions. Crises and disasters evoke a sentiment of kindness and giving that manifests in charity and philanthropy to those in despair. Of course, this is much needed, but it tends to only last as long as the crisis and disaster remain in the news. These are acts of sympathy - when you feel the suffering of others or, empathy- when you feel the suffering of others as your own. https://news.trust.org/item/20200327173920-31upm/Note: Mr Kailash Satyarthi please can you send me your articles/thought on Yemen Please provide links

As dark as coronavirus crisis seems right now, the fact is it could get much worse
'Rich countries have thrown everything they’ve got at this crisis, just to stay afloat. Without debt relief we’ll be leaving some of the poorest people in the world to sink. Across the developed world we’ve seen mortgage and rent payments paused, bailouts being packaged for businesses and corporations, and checks written for individuals who are facing unemployment. These are the essential strategies for every country looking to both curb this virus and stem an economic meltdown.' https://news.trust.org/item/20200326163721-c1a0k/
➜⇢ ➽ ➤Zakharova noted that the U.S. arbitrary sanctions are a weapon of genocide in Covid-19 times.
Russia's Foreign Minister Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova Friday reiterated her country's call to lift the illegal economic sanctions imposed by the United States on Venezuela, which they consider as a "genocide tool" in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic. "We will not tire of repeating our call to immediately cancel arbitrary unilateral sanctions that at the current juncture of the epidemic become almost a weapon of genocide," Zakharova said.
The official also stressed that her country will continue with international cooperation with the South American nation, especially now that it faces a public health emergency.
"Russia will continue to provide assistance to Venezuela, especially in the process of normalizing the health and epidemiological situation," Zakharova stressed. https://www.telesurenglish.net/news/Russia-Calls-to-Lift-Genocidal-Sanctions-Against-Venezuela-20200328-0001.html
➜⇢ ➽ ➤World Suffering Less from Coronavirus Crisis & More from an America Crisis
In his 1948 classic novel “The Plague,” which tells the story of the fictional outbreak of a rat-borne plague in the Algerian port city of Oran under French colonialism, French writer and thinker Albert Camus explores the way the plague and ensuing crisis taps into the very best and worst of the human condition.
The current coronavirus crisis, which certainly is not fictional, is doing the same in our time — only not when it comes to the actions of people in response but instead when it comes to the actions or inaction or indeed base cruelty of national governments.
In this respect, if cruelty and barbarity were Olympic sports Washington would be the permanent holder of the gold medal. Because what does it tell us when even in the midst of a global pandemic this Neocon infested administration and hegemonic political order refuses to agree to sanctions relief for Iran — a country that is among the hardest hit by the virus — in response to pleas from Tehran to do so? https://iranian.com/2020/03/30/world-suffering-less-from-coronavirus-crisis-more-from-an-america-crisis/

➜⇢ ➽ ➤Beware of Trump Using the Coronavirus as a Cover for War With Iran
The Pentagon has ordered military commanders to plan for an escalation of American combat in Iraq, issuing a directive last week to prepare a campaign to destroy an Iranian-backed militia group that has threatened more attacks against American troops.
But the United States’ top commander in Iraq has warned that such a campaign could be bloody and counterproductive and risks war with Iran. In a blunt memo last week, the commander, Lt. Gen. Robert P. White, wrote that a new military campaign would also require thousands more American troops be sent to Iraq and divert resources from what has been the primary American military mission there: training Iraqi troops to combat the Islamic State. https://theintercept.com/2020/03/30/trump-iran-war-coronavirus/
➜⇢ ➽ ➤In a 10-Day Span, ICE Flew This Iranian Detainee Across the Country Nine Times
Less than two weeks ago, the Trump administration urged Americans to avoid nonessential travel to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Major airlines slashed their routes. All the while, Sirous Asgari took nine different flights around the country.
None of them was by choice.
Asgari bounced around on chartered jets from Louisiana to Texas to New Jersey — a circuitous journey arranged by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, which has custody of the 59-year-old Iranian man. The federal agency continues to shuffle detainees around the nation, exposing them and others to possible infection.
As panic grows inside ICE facilities over the potential spread of the virus, some immigration attorneys said they were promised by local ICE officials last week that detainee transfers would halt temporarily. But the government has continued the practice anyway, data and interviews show. https://iranian.com/2020/03/30/in-a-10-day-span-ice-flew-this-iranian-detainee-across-the-country-nine-times/

The CDC will set up a coronavirus 'surveillance and data collection system' as part of the $2 tr President Donald Trump signed into law a sweeping stimulus bill that will pump emergency funding into the CDC to combat the coronavirus, including a system to gather data on how the virus is spreading.
The CDC's new funding is part of an emergency stimulus package that provides $2 trillion in funding to boost government health programs and stabilize the American economy during the coronavirus crisis.
